Mock Log Cabin Quilt Block Pattern
Introduction & Cutting Chart for Mock Log Cabin Quilt Block Pattern
8" Finished Quilt Block
Here's a mock, simple and free, log cabin quilt block pattern that looks a bit like a log cabin block--but goes together a lot more quickly and easily, especially when you use chain piecing to assemble it.
Choose four outer fabrics for the rectangles that surround the four-patch center, moving from dark to medium in a clockwise manner as shown in the illustration. Variations in color value will give you a good number of layout possibilities when it's time to sew the blocks together.
You needn't sew with black and white fabrics. They are used in the drawings to help illustrate value placement.
The instructions make three mock log cabin quilt blocks.
Repeat to make additional blocks. Make this quilt block as scrappy as you like by varying its fabrics.
Quilt Block Cutting Chart
For Outer Rectangles
Very dark fabric:
Cut three 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
Dark fabric:
Cut three 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Medium dark fabric:
Cut three 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
Medium fabric:
Cut three 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles
For Four-Patch Centers
Medium light fabric:
Cut one 2 1/2" x 17" strip
Light fabric:
Cut one 2 1/2" x 17" strip
Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all seams. Cut all pieces so the fabric's straight grain runs parallel to the outer edges.
Assemble the Mock Log Cabin Block:
Make the Fou-Patch Centers
Sew the 17-inch light and medium-light strips together on their long sides.
Press seam allowance towards the darker strip.
Use your rotary cutting equipment to square up one end of the strip and cut six 2-1/2" segments from it.
Sew together two units from Step 1, matching center seams carefully. Press. Make five more four-patch units.
Sew Rectangular "Logs" to the Four-Patch Center
Use chain piecing to assemble the quilt blocks
Sew a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" deep-dark strip to the top of a four-patch unit, positioning the patches as shown above.
Without breaking the thread, feed another four-patch unit and deep-dark rectangular unit through the sewing machine, then a third.
Remove from the machine and clip the threads between the units. Press seam allowances towards the deep-dark strips.
Position the quilt blocks with the deep-dark strip on top. Sew a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" dark rectangle to the right-hand side of each partial block, chain piecing again. Press seam allowances towards the dark strips.
Continue working in a clockwise direction and add a medium-dark strip to the bottom of each block. Press seam allowances towards the new strip.
Finish up by sewing the final, medium strip to the remaining side of each quilt block. Press seam allowances towards the new strips.
Sew the blocks side by side much as you would a log cabin block, varying the arrangement of dark and light patches to create diagonal rows of color.
