Concrete Driveways, Advantages and Disadvantages

Concrete is a composite of cement and aggregates, such as sand, stone and glass.

The plant where this material is made can vary the proportions of the basic ingredients,as well as add other substances ( called admixtures )to vary the properties of the finished product.Air is one of the most common admixtures.

The air mixed with the material, helps to hold up the driveway through the 'Freeze-Thaw Cycle' that is typical in many parts of the country.

These driveways are typically 4 inches thick and are placed over a compacted layer of crushed stone.Sometimes a reinforcing grid is added to the mixture for strength. The Grid won't prevent the driveway from cracking ,but it will hold it together if and when it does crack.

Sealing the driveway every 1-2 years will improve it's durability.Avoid using deicing chemicals atleast for the first year as they normally eat into the surface.

Pro's

Very hard wearing and long lasting

Light in color, Makes the drive brighter. Even at night

Can be finished in a variety of textures and colors

Con's
